PGA HOPE has been extremely transformative for our veterans through the game of golf. This program helps us give back to veterans that have sacrificed so much for our country. PGA HOPE creates a supportive community where veterans can connect, share experiences, and create lasting friendships. From the start of PGA HOPE at TNPGA in 2019, we have had over 500 individuals enroll in the program. Through our sessions, veterans not only rediscover their love for the game, but also discover renewed purpose…enhancing their quality of life.

Lamar Mills, Tennessee Golf Foundation Regional Director of Chattanooga

Lamar Mills is the Tennessee Golf Foundation Regional Director of Chattanooga. He describes PGA HOPE as impactful. PGA HOPE has fostered many relationships, opened doors for partnerships, and created opportunities for both Mr. Mills and the graduates. Since his first session in April of 2022, there have been almost 100 PGA HOPE alumni in Chattanooga. Even after each session, this program continues to create comradery among the veterans as they now play together and engage in other activities outside of golf. Mr. Mills believes that other golf courses should hire PGA HOPE graduates because they are always on time, have phenomenal communication, and are always looking for meaningful responsibilities and jobs. Recently, two graduates were hired at McLemore Club, and an additional two volunteers at Brown Acres Golf Course.

When asked what advice he would give to other TNPGA leads for them to keep in mind after the program ends, he said to “listen to the veterans, they will give you feedback. Have conversations with them, and build relations with them. Keep your ears open and make sure you are communicating with them because you never know what doors will open up from it”. TNPGA is so grateful for Mr. Mills and the great work that he has done for PGA HOPE.

Mickey Barker, Golf Administrator, City of Memphis

Mickey Barker continues to make a tremendous impact on the PGA HOPE program. Mr. Barker and his team recently hired two PGA HOPE graduates as part-time golf attendants, Jason (Air Force) and Sean (Navy). As explained by Mr. Barker, both gentlemen enjoy being around other people and always have a smile on their faces. He believes that other golf courses should hire PGA HOPE graduates because they are quality people with a great work ethic instilled by their military experience.

Veterans bring a unique set of skills and qualities to the workforce, including discipline, leadership, and resilience, honed through their service. By employing veterans, organizations gain dedicated and dependable individuals who thrive under pressure and excel in teamwork. Additionally, hiring veterans is a meaningful way to express gratitude for their sacrifices and ensure their successful transition to civilian life. PGA HOPE underscores the importance of recognizing the immense value veterans bring to communities, both on and off the golf course, fostering a culture of inclusivity and support for those who have served our country.

VA Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Veteran Affairs

PGA HOPE graduate volunteer opportunities offer many benefits, both for the veterans who participate and for the communities they serve. Firstly, these opportunities provide a sense of purpose and belonging for our graduates, allowing them to continue their journey of healing and personal growth beyond the program. By volunteering, veterans can leverage the skills and confidence they’ve developed through golf to make a positive impact in their communities. Additionally, volunteering offers a platform for PGA HOPE graduates to share their experiences and insights with others. Moreover, volunteering allows veterans to stay connected to the game of golf, which has proven therapeutic benefits for physical and mental well-being. Beyond personal fulfillment, volunteer opportunities with PGA HOPE empower veterans to give back to their communities and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, reinforcing the values of service and camaraderie instilled during their military service.
