(MEMPHIS, Tenn.) – Tennessee’s top 32 professional and amateur golfers gathered at Colonial Country Club in Memphis on October 28-29, 2024, for the 57th edition of the Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches. The prestigious John Deal Trophy was awarded to the professional team, who triumphed with a total score of 17 to the amateurs’ 15.

“The Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches were founded in 1968 by Old Hickory Country Club member John Deal. The Cup is named in honor of John’s contributions to the matches and to Tennessee golf”.

With a historical advantage of 32-24 in the overall series, the professionals were determined to extend their lead, though the amateurs boasted a four-year winning streak. After Day 1, the amateurs held a slim 9-7 lead, setting the stage for an exhilarating Day 2 with 16 points on the line. Both teams displayed remarkable tenacity, with the professionals winning 9 out of 16 singles matches and tying 2.

The day kicked off with Chase Harris edging out Seth Brandon 1 up in the opening match. The amateurs quickly leveled the score by winning the second match with one hole to spare. Jared Melson fought to a tie against Alan Jones in the third match, while Lee Whitehead delivered an impressive 4&2 victory. The professionals then built momentum, with Glenn Hudson winning 3&2, Kelvin Burgin narrowly securing his match 1 up, and Bobby Cochran and Greg Wyatt each finishing strong at 4&3. Mike Vance, Allie Knight, and Josh Bevell also claimed victories with holes to spare, winning 3&2, 2&1, and 2&1, respectively.

With just three matches remaining, the professional team needed one more win to clinch the John Deal Trophy. Johan Kok’s match against Winston Margaritis ended in a tie, leaving two matches to decide the champion. Josh Bevell sealed the professionals’ victory with a 2&1 win, ensuring their triumph.

The professional team featured a wealth of experience, including Josh Bevell, Adam Forgey, Allie Knight, Braxton Hunter, Chase Harris, Bobby Cochran, Mike Vance, Johan Kok, Lee Whitehead, Scott Moran, Jared Melson, Greg Wyatt, Chris Woods, Audie Johnson, Kelvin Burgin, and Glenn Hudson.
