CHATTANOOGA, TN (Aug 31, 2021) – After a wet Tuesday at Council Fire Golf Club, the National Car Rental Tennessee Assistant PGA Championship is in the books after being shortened to 18 holes due to the golf course being unplayable.  Yesterday 38 Assistants from across the section teed it up for their chance to claim one of three spots in the 2021 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship.  The top-10 were able to card rounds of even-par or better, but Paul Apyan was able to separate himself to secure the victory.

Paul Apyan (Hixson, TN) fired a bogey free 5-under (67) to win the National Car Rental Tennessee Assistant PGA Championship by two-shots. “It felt good to be competing again,” said Apyan. “The game feels good and I’m excited to represent the Tennessee Section in November.”

Jesse Grimes (Murfreesboro, TN) and Ty Medling (Collierville, TN) tied for second after posting rounds of 69 (-3).  Medling started the round hot with three straight birdies.  He would go on to card one bogey before the turn.  He played the back-nine 1-under par carding two bogeys and three birdies.  Grimes had an eagle on number two to get out to a good start, but would double bogey hole eight to make the turn at even-par.  Grimes then birdied four straight on holes 11-14 before making a bogey to finish 3-under.

Joel Stark (Nashville, TN) had an up and down round carding two double bogeys, but managed to fight his way back after playing the par 5’s 4-under par.  Stark finished solo fifth at 1-under par.  Mike Vance (Jackson, TN) fired a 70 (-2) with four birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Rolex Assistant Player of the Year points leader Jeff Berry (Murfreesboro, TN) finished tied for sixth with Alex Cox (Old Hickory, TN), Marshall Talkington (Jackson, TN), Matt Nuttall (Birmingham, AL), and defending champion Lee Whitehead (Louisville, TN) at even-par.

Congratulations to our qualifiers for the 45th National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship Paul Apyan, Jesse Grimes, and Ty Medling. They’ll tee it up November 11-14, 2021 in Port St. Lucie, Florida at the PGA Golf Club Wanamaker Course.  Alternates for the event will be Mike Vance, Joel Stark, and Lee Whitehead.

The National Car Rental Tennessee PGA Championship is a level one Rolex Assistant Player of the Year points event.

A special thank you to all of the staff at Council Fire Golf Club for their tremendous hospitality.
