Cliff Kresge Overcomes Seven-Shot Deficit to Triumph at Tennessee Senior State Open
The 16th playing of the Tennessee Senior State Open took place June 9–10 at the beautiful Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade, TN. This prestigious 36-hole championship welcomed 126 of the state’s top senior golfers, divided between a 102-player Championship Division and a 24-player Super Senior Division.
Now a cornerstone event in Tennessee’s senior golf calendar, the tournament consistently draws elite amateur talent and seasoned PGA Professionals. This year’s field included past champions, Crossville locals, and members of the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame. Seven players from the local area teed it up this year: Jesse Anderson (a), John Bradshaw (a), Jack Sixkiller, Kip Henley (a), Greg Wyatt, Kelvin Burgin, and Dale Wheeler (a).
After a tough first round, Cliff Kresge found himself seven shots off the lead and short on confidence. “I even told my wife, ‘It’s not like I’m going to get a chance to win this thing. I’m just going to try and build some confidence for the Senior U.S. Open I have in a couple weeks,’” Kresge admitted. But a simple swing adjustment—spotted after watching a video taken by one of his playing partners—completely changed his trajectory. In Round 2, Kresge found his rhythm, carding seven birdies on his way to an impressive 65 that gave him the advantage over Gilbert.
Kresge is no stranger to comebacks. He won this same event in 2021, just months after undergoing triple-bypass surgery. A former PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions member, his experience and determination were on full display once again.
Nashville amateur Stuart Smith emerged victorious in the Super Senior Division, narrowly defeating defending champion Buzz Fly by one stroke with a final score of +1. Smith posted five birdies in Round 1 and looked steady for much of Round 2, carding a consistent front nine. However, the back nine tested his nerves, with four bogeys and two birdies creating a nail-biting finish. Ultimately, Smith held on to secure the title.
We extend our sincere thanks to our presenting sponsor, Fairfield Glade, whose continued support makes this championship possible. Special recognition also goes to the outstanding staff at Stonehenge Golf Club and the many dedicated volunteers from the Fairfield Glade community. Their hospitality, organization, and attention to detail created a memorable experience for all players and guests.
