Kok Eclipses Competition
Wins 49th Tennessee PGA Professional Championship
As the sun rose Wednesday morning, the participants in the final round of the Tennessee PGA Professional Championship awoke to a golf course at Hideaway at Arrington that was prepared to present the toughest test of golf in the state. A light rain Tuesday evening had given an already difficult golf course, the added teeth it needed to defend itself against the best golfers in the state. With five spots up for grabs into the National PGA Professional Championship, a crowded leaderboard of PGA Professionals from every corner of Tennessee, prepared to take aim at their chance to claim the title of Tennessee PGA Professional Champion.
The day began with a three way tie atop the leaderboard as Brock Shafer (Windyke CC), Jake Reeves (Fairways & Greens) and Hideaway at Arrington’s own Johan Kok had battled their way to 7-under. Not far behind Belle Meade’s Oliver Peacock sat at 6-under and Memphis National Golf Club’s PGA Professional Brian Wood sat at 5-under through Round 2. Through the front nine the field fought their way through a difficult setup and a wind that shifted in a different direction at every turn. The five hardest holes statistically on the golf course were in the last 6 holes on the front side. It was on the back 9 that the fight for the Championship would take on a life of its own.
In the next to last group Wood battled in front of the final pairing containing Kok and Reeves and would set the pace. On the par 3 11th hole, Kok would come up just short of the green and have a difficult shot to a back left hole location. Reeves would get in with a par after his tee shot landed on the front of the green and presented an easy two putt. Getting up and down would prove too difficult from a tough lie for Kok and he would walk away with a bogey. After a birdie at 12, Kok held a 2-stroke lead over the field, including Reeves and Wood. Both golfers would par 13 and Kok maintained his lead. The 14th hole, a difficult par 5 that tested the field all week, would prove easy for Reeves and Kok who both birdied. On the 15th hole, Kok hit a tee shot that drifted left, towards the woods, he would receive a quality bounce off a tree and the cart path to come to rest in a difficult side hill lie in the left rough. After a long drive in the middle of the fairway, Reeves would strike a tremendous iron shot to the middle of the green setting up a birdie putt. Kok would fly the green and have a downhill chip shot that stopped short of the hole. Reeves would roll in his 10-foot birdie putt, putting the pressure on Kok. Missing on the high side Kok would walk away with a bogey and a 1-stroke lead. The par 3 16th hole awaited. Reeves would tee off first and leave his shot just on the front edge of the green, with a hole location in the middle of the green he would have a difficult uphill putt for birdie. Kok left his shot short of the green and right of the hole and would follow that up with a chip shot that didn’t roll out as much as expected after catching just a little too much of the fringe. Reeves would show his steadiness rolling in his third birdie putt in a row, while Kok would come away with a two putt bogey, his second in a row. Reeves would walk away with a 2-stroke lead through 16 after showing off his tremendous putting skills. However, on the 17th Reeves would give one stroke back after bogeying.
Coming into the 18th the scene was set for a finish befitting the Championship. In the next to last group, Wood would roll in his birdie putt at the 18th hole, a par 4 that only allowed 5 birdies all day, to make him the leader in the clubhouse at 6-under. A string of great shots got Kok and Reeves to the 18th green, and presented birdie putts for both players. Reeves would miss his 30 foot birdie putt but would have an easy tap in for par to come in a 6-under and tied with Wood. Kok would line up his birdie putt from 15 feet and take a look from every angle. Kok would say after the round, “At first look, I really was just looking at a 2 putt. I knew I needed to get it close and walk away with a par, that would get me in the top 5 and I would qualify for the National event. After looking it over, I felt really confident about the read and thought I would go for it. As it topped the hill, you could tell it had a chance if it had the speed.” With a gallery of local spectators, the Hideaway at Arrington Host Professional would receive the loudest applause of the day as the birdie putt fell into the hole.
Three playoff holes later, Johan Kok would hold off Wood and Reeves to claim his first Tennessee PGA Professional Championship.
Filling the 4th and 5th spot would be Belle Meade Country Club’s Oliver Peacock and Tellico Village PGA Professional Casey Flenniken.
The alternates in order; Bobby O’Brien, Jared Melson, Dave Ambrose and Brock Shafer.
